A Year in Review!

Hi All, Emily Miethner here! First of all, I finally designed HAGA a logo! And it's pretty ballin.

As co-founder/co-president/president of HAGA, I couldn't be more proud of all we've done as such as young club...it's really incredible. HAGA has become a household name on the Hofstra campus, and I'm confident the club will continue to grow and accomplish more and more. Here is a list of our achievements from this year.

Spring:
  • Held the 2nd Annual, "Not All Artists are Starving, A Night of Networking"
  • NAAAS featured in Newsday, AM New York, and the Fine Arts website.
  • Participated in Relay for Life and raised $695
  • Created a viral ad campaign for Hofstra Earth Day 2010, with each member designing a poster.
  • Three Successful Photoshop Workshops
  • Sponsor of Hofstra MusicFest
  • Trip to New York City (Chelsea) to check out galleries
  • Continued the Applebees Thursdays Tradition

Fall:
  • Good vs. Evil Gallery Opening
  • Making Strides Breast Cancer Walk
  • Photoshop Workshops
  • Co-sponsored the Art of Healing and had a full display case of members artwork.
  • Started the Applebees Thursdays Tradition
  • Co-Sponsored FONT party
  • Dave and Busters End of the Year Dinner
  • Trip to New York City (Lower East Side) to check out galleries and The New Museum
Congrats to the new Executive Board!

Not All Artists are Starving, A Night of Networking - RECAP!

The 2nd Annual "Not All Artists are Starving, A Night of Networking" was a HUGE success!

On March 2nd, 2010, The Hofstra Association of Graphic Arts in association with the Career Center, held the second annual "Not All Artists are Starving, A Night of Networking." The goal was to give students a chance to hear from alumni and professionals who are working artists. Seven speakers, all from varying fields with varying backgrounds, gave students advice and answered questions about how to prepare for the transition from college to the "real world." The night started with an informal panel, followed by mingling, networking, and hors d'eourves. The event was a huge success. Students gained insight and left feeling hopeful, motivated, and inspired.

Quick facts:
  • Presented by the Hofstra Association of Graphic Arts and The Career Center
  • Sponsored by The Fine Arts Department, The Golden Key Honors Society, and The Hofstra Association of Photographic Arts
  • Over 100 attendees
7 speakersMedia Coverage
What the students are saying...

"The questions that were asked really helped me to understand more about what it means to be an artist, and the risks one has to be willing to take."

"The variety (of the panel) was terrific and they offered fantastic advice from several different perspectives."

"I got a lot of contacts and another chance to get myself out there!"

"I got some confidence and some ideas for the future. Completely priceless :]"

"I got a good perspective on what to do when it comes to careers, not only just art but everything in general. It was refreshing."

What the speakers are saying...

"The idea of having an event like this is absolutely wonderful to me. As I said during the event, I just wish that they had this while I was a student here at Hofstra U. To be a part of it was a privilege and honor."

"I liked how conversational the panel was; I think it benefited the students that all the panelists were able and willing to continue others' thoughts, comment on them, and even disagree."

"For having run events at Hofstra myself while I was a student there I was taken aback by how well organized and executed the event was! I hope the students were able to gather as much, and I believe they got a lot of information/encouragement/useful insight that will hopefully help them."
